Amateur Radio, or HAM Radio as it is often called, was created in the early 1900s as a means that anyone, passing a simple test, could build and experiment, and transmit and recieve using any type of radio in a series of "bands" that were set aside only for Amateur use. Amateur Radio bands are free of all commercial traffic, and wide open to anyone with an Amateur Radio license. You can talk to people across the room or on the other side of the world, using voice, Morse Code, or digitally using a computer and a packet radio modem. There are Amateur Radio satellites set aside for Amateur use only, and you can build and play with your own equipment.
Amateur Radio is more than just a hobby, it's a group of people dedicated to serving others with their gift of communication, and eager to test and expand the limits of communication -- anywhere.
